Friends of Burnley Gardens

Camellia Walk 
A guided walk among the fine camellia collection dating from the 1900s. You will be told of its development and the role of Alex Jessop who later, as Director, built up the collection at the Botanic Gardens .

 The Australian Plants Society is holding its 11th annual Australian Native Plant Sale There will be a wide variety of native plant stalls, food stalls, kids' craft activities, specialist book stall, native flower display, raffles and a guessing competition. All attendees receive a free tubestock plant. Come along, pick up some growing tips, and take home some Australian native plants.

Ken Gosbell, Chairman, Australasian Wader Studies Group has chosen as his topic Frequent Flyers – Birds with the World at their Wingtips. Shorebirds or waders journey halfway around the world from Australia to the northern hemisphere each year to breed. Come and learn about these amazing birds and their battles to survive habitat destruction and climate change.

Marilyn Gray’s topic is Creating Habitat for Birds, which should be very interesting as well as being very relevant for gardeners. Marilyn will speak from firsthand experience gained through developing her own Australian plant garden at Montrose. Her many years as Curator, Karwarra Garden at Kalorama in the Dandenongs will also bring much of value to the presentation.

Stephanie Alexander has been a driving force in the Melbourne restaurant scene for more than 30 years, her best selling Cook’s Companion is an Australian Classic.  In 2004 she established the not-for-profit Stephanie Alexander Kitchen garden Foundation enabling 1000’s of young children to learn about growing harvesting and cooking delicious and healthy food.  Stephanie will share her experiences with us in this talk
