To cope with desert conditions, plants must be able to withstand not only extremely hot, dry conditions, but also the bitterly cold nights that characterise the desert environment. Excellent drainage is generally essential and usually sandy soils are preferred.
Eremophila crassifolia (Desert Fuchsia) - Australian inland shrub to 3m; narrow grey-green foliage; pink to purple tubular bell flowers especially in winter and spring; sun or light dappled shade. Baeckea crassifolia - (Desert Baeckea) - Australian inland small shrub to 50cm; tiny leaves; masses of tiny pink five-petalled flowers in winter and early spring; sun to light shade.
Gossypium sturtianum (Sturt's Desert Rose) - Australian shrub to 2m; grey-gren speckled leaves; pretty hibiscus-like mauve-pink flowers in winter & spring; floral emblem of NT; frost sensitive. Eremocitrus glauca (Wild Lime) - Australian small tree to 8m; blue-grey foliage & many thorns; spring flowers followed by thin-skinned lime-green citrus fruits; tolerant of alkaline soils; suckering habit. Acacia ligulata (Small Cooba) - bushy, rounded Australian shrub to 5m; blue-green phyllodes; yellow ball flowers in spring; tolerant of salt & sandy soil.
